For When You Struggle to Trust in Your Worth

(I needed to ask myself these questions again this week.) There are a lot of things I want to do. There are many people I’d like to get to know and already established relationships that I long to take deeper. Sometimes I take a step toward one of these things, but often I stay stuck where I am for far too long. I tell myself that I can’t do it because I’m not smart enough or talented enough or don’t have enough training.…

Are You Willing to be Visible and Take Up Space?

If we want to put ourselves out there and share our work with others, we need to be willing to be visible and take up space. ~Fabeku Fatunmise I tend to try to take up as little space as possible. I’m fairly tall, but I often slouch and I stand or sit with my arms crossed. I even sleep curled up in a ball. I shy away from wearing bright colors or bold patterns.…

When Gratitude Feels Stale

I have no doubt you’ve heard the value in keeping a gratitude journal or having some sort of gratitude practice. This time of year there is an abundance of articles about gratitude. Previously, I told you about gratitude’s place in the three tiny lists I make each morning. I love these lists. They only take a few seconds and very little space. They ground my day, reminding me of what I have, that I am loved, and that I am enough.…

Finding Love in a Job I Didn’t Want

This post originally appeared on Middle Places, which, sadly, is no more. I hope it brings you encouragement today. I spent four years working the overnight shift in an assisted living community. It wasn’t a job I ever expected to have. Ever since outgrowing my childhood dream of being a nurse and mountain climber, my main criteria for a job was that it not be remotely medical. But after getting laid off and spending month’s job hunting, I wasn’t in any position to be picky.…

Pain and Quiet

I often listen to music or podcasts while cleaning or cooking or driving. I enjoy learning something new or pondering a different perspective while my hands are busy with other things. This week I’ve been listening to the quiet. The quiet, I guess, can be a bit noisy at times—cars driving past, my Boston Terrier snoring, the neighbor’s lawnmower, the woodpecker in my maple tree. Part of the reason I’m listening to the quiet is that it’s finally Spring and with the windows wide open I’m learning the sounds of my new neighborhood.…

How a Simple Visual Can Make You a Better Listener

Some conversations are a mutual back and forth. Others focus more on one participant or another. No matter what type of conversation I’m in, it can be hard to listen well. I’m easily distracted by what’s happening at the next table or the book I just read, by my to-do list or my stomach growling, by my reaction to what the other person is saying or planning my response. I use a very simple mental picture to help me navigate these distractions.…

Where We’ve Been

As 2016 winds down, I’ve been looking back over the past year. I’ve shared a lot of words with you here at joRuth, but I’ve also been honored to be invited into other spaces. Here are some places I’ve been… Sometimes we wait to feel a certain way before we take action. Often, however, it is our actions that prompt our feelings instead of the other we around. Love can show up when we aren’t even looking for it.…
